Kenpo Techniques:

Kenpo includes the kicks and strikes found in traditional Karate and Tae Kwon Do, the throws of Judo, the joint manipulations of Jiu Jutsu and Chin Na, and the flowing locks and throws of Aikido. It differs from other martial arts in that it is based on self defense techniques, not individual movements. For example, instead of practicing a simple front snap kick, we might study a defense technique that begins with a front snap kick, then follows up with hand strikes, and finishes with a throw (see Arcing Blades below). We study techniques for every conceivable kind of attack, which gives us a more complete arsenal of responses than studying the individual movements in isolation. The style currently contains over 600 techniques and we continue to seek out the best new moves as the martial arts evolve.

The majority of our forms, or katas, are made up of the same techniques we study for the street, making them a reinforcement of our fighting skills rather than a disconnected, stiff, and formal type of dance. They are also much more complex and flowing, since a simple form with a mere ten techniques will have forty or fifty individual movements – about the limit for most traditional forms. Our longest forms have in excess of fifty techniques and hundreds of individual moves.
