About Us

Hit It! Fitness is a clean, modern facility featuring a complete training room and a separate combat room. The combat room is equipped with full mats (the same as are used in top gymnastic competitions, making the perfect surface for martial arts and fencing), weapons-training equipment (both western fencing and traditional oriental weapons) and an official-sized electronic fencing strip.

Dr. Stan Hurd, Head Instructor
Stan has been a martial artist for 35 years, and has fenced for 30. With a Ph.D. in neurochemistry (the biochemistry of the central nervous system) he has a unique background for a trainer and instructor. His in-depth understanding of the body’s functioning brings a special dimension to both his martial arts instruction and personal training programs.

As a life-long athlete, he has been exposed to many different training systems, and for the last several years has devoted a great deal of study to the literature of exercise physiology and its practical application. In particular, he has attempted to interpret the scientific studies, which are done largely on and for professional athletes, in terms of their application to the normal population.

He has studied many different martial arts, including Shotokan, Aikido, Kun Tao and Judo, but he has always remained focused on the study of Kenpo, a style that he says is the most complete single martial arts he has ever come across.

Stan has enjoyed fencing since he tried it in 1972. First as a competitive sabreur in college, then as sabre coach at his alma mater, Stan has found fencing to be both just pure fun in itself and a fascinating addition to his martial arts skills and philosophies. He now teaches at Hit It! and is the head fencing coach at Cheshire Academy, a private school nearby.
